Terminal Inspection Checklist
Abstract
Areas to observe in a Motor Truck Terminal
are outlined in this report as an aid to in analyzing
the risks that may be present.
General
- Adequate access routes for emergency equipment?
- Access to the facility restricted to authorized
personnel?
- Exits well marked, accessible, unlocked and with
safe egress?
- Fire doors unobstructed?
- Records indicating periodic fire drills?
- Fire extinguishers readily accessible and maintained?
- Main sprinkler control valve locked or supervised
in open position?
- First aid supplies available?
- Proper receptacles in authorized smoking areas?
- Formal emergency response plan?
- Telephone numbers of fire and police departments
posted?
- Provision for equipment to be protected in emergency?
- Written hazard communications program for dangerous
chemicals?
- Current inventory of hazardous chemicals used or
transported?
- Material Safety Data Sheets available?
- Documented training of employees on handling chemicals?
- Provisions to clean up chemical spill or leak?
Terminal Grounds
- Security controls adequate?
- Yard lights adequate and functional?
- Yard surface smooth and well-drained?
- Yard free of trash accumulations?
- Vehicle speed limits posted and enforced?
- Equipment properly parked?
- Fuel pumps protected from damage?
- Fueling area free of spills?
- Fueling areas posted "No Smoking" and
enforced?
- Fire extinguisher readily accessible near fueling
area?
- Ladders and stairs in good condition?
- Wheel chocks available at loading dock?
- Spotted trailers at dock chocked?
- Dock bumpers in good condition?
Office Facilities
- Passageways unobstructed and lighting adequate?
- Supplies and files properly stored?
- File cabinets secured to each other & closed
when not in use?
- Trash receptacles adequate and not overflowing
with refuse?
- Proper receptacles if smoking is allowed?
- Electric and communications wire safely routed?
- Emergency telephone numbers readily available?
- Fire extinguishers properly mounted and charged?
Freight Dock
- Floors clean and in good condition?
- Aisles clearly designated?
- Freight stacked safely?
- Hazardous material handled and stored appropriately?
- Trash in proper receptacles?
- Dunnage neatly stored?
- "No Smoking" areas posted as necessary?
- Fire extinguishers properly mounted and charged?
- Adequate lighting, including trailer lights?
- Dock plates in good condition and stored properly?
- Forklift trucks properly parked?
- Fueling of freight handling equipment done away
from dock?
- Powered equipment operators properly trained?
- Powered equipment operated at a safe speed?
- Freight handler's vision unobscured by load?
- Freight handlers assure that trailer is chocked
or secured to dock?
Maintenance Shop
- Shop area free of spills and grease accumulations?
- Trash in proper receptacles?
- "No Smoking" areas clearly indicated
and enforced?
- Tools reasonably clean and orderly?
- Sufficient electrical power?
- Electrically powered tools properly grounded?
- Machine guards installed and functional?
- Air pressure used for cleaning reduced to 30 psi?
- Personal protective equipment used when necessary?
- Proper ventilation provided where necessary?
- Flammable/combustible materials isolated from ignition
sources?
- Fire extinguishers properly selected, mounted and
charged?
- Dip tanks closed when not in use?
- Proper cleaning solvents used (not gasoline)?
- Welding equipment well maintained?
- Cylinders upright with oxygen 20 or more feet from
fuel tanks?
- Vehicle movement in shop carefully controlled?
- Perimeter of open pits provided with barrier when
exposed?
- Hoists and cranes well maintained and properly
rated?
- Mechanics use jack stands, not jacks, when under
vehicles?
- Paint spraying operations appropriately equipped?
- Battery charging operations appropriately equipped?
- Storage areas for parts and supplies structurally
sufficient?
- Hazardous materials properly stored?
- Employees who service truck tires appropriately
trained?
- Tire restraining devices and inflation equipment
available?
